Too basic。 I was looking for something more technical and focusing on the art and the form。 Instead we have an annoying author teaching us how to use manual mode - not to mention woefully outdated and straight up wrong information and ideology presented as advice。 (White balance is useless use cloud mode - huh?)

Note: I received a digital review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley。

Very simple and repetitive, outdated, poorly written。 Contains some nice tips, but that's it。 The whole thing could easily be condensed to an A4 paper。 I am honestly shocked at how much this is praised。 Very simple and repetitive, outdated, poorly written。 Contains some nice tips, but that's it。 The whole thing could easily be condensed to an A4 paper。 I am honestly shocked at how much this is praised。 。。。more

This was the most clear and helpful book I have ever read about photography。 I have fumbled my way through countless books with tips for novice photographers and at the end of them remember very little, however, this book was easy to understand and concrete。 If the information doesn't suck you in the pictures most definitely will。 Bryan Peterson's work is absolutely stunning。 It is a book to keep on the shelf for its beauty as well as for its knowledge。 This was the most clear and helpful book I have ever read about photography。 I have fumbled my way through countless books with tips for novice photographers and at the end of them remember very little, however, this book was easy to understand and concrete。 If the information doesn't suck you in the pictures most definitely will。 Bryan Peterson's work is absolutely stunning。 It is a book to keep on the shelf for its beauty as well as for its knowledge。 。。。more

Great introductory book for those "new" to photography or moving from their camera phone to a camera。 I found it had just enough repetition on the exposure triangle without feeling patronizing。 Definitely a great book that I can definitely see myself referencing again and again! A very good and helpful books for amateur photographers like myself, although I felt that I knew a little bit about almost a lot of the topics that were covered, it was still useful to have them all covered and explained in a single book, it also has a lot of nice photographs and the author explains how he took them and use them as examples of the techniques he explains。

This is for the 4th edition: The images were beautiful and the details of the aperture, shutter speed and ISO that were provided were helpful。 I knew the theory before reading this book but the analogies helped to cement the ideas better in my mind。 Learned a lot about metering, and how to get a correct exposure and also how to get a creatively correct exposure。 I liked the intro to advanced techniques and wished there was more。 I can’t wait to try out the techniques I learned from this book。

A clear explanation (if somewhat occasionally long-winded) on the topic of exposure。 I already knew 95% of this stuff, but so far, if I had to recommend a book about exposure to a beginner, this would probably be it。 His pages on (not fearing) diffraction have been particularly useful。 If I had to find a flaw with it, it would be the fact the author does not mention the different types of aberration and optical phenomena such as vignetting occurring at different apertures, except for maybe the a A clear explanation (if somewhat occasionally long-winded) on the topic of exposure。 I already knew 95% of this stuff, but so far, if I had to recommend a book about exposure to a beginner, this would probably be it。 His pages on (not fearing) diffraction have been particularly useful。 If I had to find a flaw with it, it would be the fact the author does not mention the different types of aberration and optical phenomena such as vignetting occurring at different apertures, except for maybe the above mentioned phenomenon of diffraction。 Bryan Peterson is such great a instructor though, and overall a kind human being, I recommend you follow him on Instagram (and elsewhere)。 。。。more

Incredibly effective and intuitive guide on exposure。 You will come out of it with a solid foundation of photography。 If you read it, I know it can be tempting to skip the captions on the pictures but I promise it is one of the most useful parts。 Highly recommend this book for anyone getting into photography。

It's a colorful read painted with emotions around capturing different types of exposures(pictures) captioned with the precise techniques to get them。 The author would take you from beginner level of setting the right exposure to capturing the Wao pictures。 Only thing is that all the pictures captured in the book are using Nikon cameras。 Other than that it is an insightful and interesting read for any budding photographer or anyone looking to take photography as a hobby。 It's a colorful read painted with emotions around capturing different types of exposures(pictures) captioned with the precise techniques to get them。 The author would take you from beginner level of setting the right exposure to capturing the Wao pictures。 Only thing is that all the pictures captured in the book are using Nikon cameras。 Other than that it is an insightful and interesting read for any budding photographer or anyone looking to take photography as a hobby。 。。。more

Great book。 Leart a lot of techniques。 Although, I breezed through the flash photography section。 Might re-read the flash photography section thoroughly once I invest in a good flash。

The first time you change the setting on your camera from "automatic" to "manual," there's a lot to think about。 Those without years of experience or a background in optics would be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the decisions they have to make。 This book contains a wealth of information and the author takes time to explain each of the elements affects a photograph。 The quality of information is top-notch。 However, the pedagogical structure of the book leaves a bit to be desire The first time you change the setting on your camera from "automatic" to "manual," there's a lot to think about。 Those without years of experience or a background in optics would be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the decisions they have to make。 This book contains a wealth of information and the author takes time to explain each of the elements affects a photograph。 The quality of information is top-notch。 However, the pedagogical structure of the book leaves a bit to be desired, and many readers will finish the book feeling even more overwhelmed than when they started (a feeling that will fade with some more experience, of course)。The thing the book really needs, I think, is a wider selection of examples and guided exercises。 Yes, it contains both of those things, but many of the photographs in the book, brilliant as they are, illustrate only the correct way to do things。 Relatively few illustrations show the reader the difference between correct and incorrect exposures, and those would help to make the rather abstract concepts of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc。 feel more concrete。 It would have been great had the author included sections of photographs varying these different parameters in order to visually demonstrate how each affects a photograph under varying conditions。 The stories the author tells of how his various photographs came to be are interesting, but ultimately these "real world" photographs are of less educational value than some "staged" photographs specifically intended to prove points。However, despite the fact that the book can sometimes overwhelm with its discussions of abstractions and the reader could sometimes benefit from more authorial guidance, there's no need to panic。 The information you need IS in these pages。 You just have to plan on spending some time reading (and re-reading) each chapter and then trying the various techniques。 If you approach this book less as a lesson and more as a guide to help make sense of your own trial-and-error experimentation, its value becomes clearer。 Trying to learn photography from this book is a fool's errand, but if you're learning by practicing and experimenting on your own, this book WILL help you to make sense of the results you get, and that's of immense value in and of itself。Ultimately, I don't think this book lives up to its subtitle's claim to teach you "how to shoot great photographs with any camera。" For that, you'll need more than just one relatively short book。 But it is nevertheless a valuable resource in a beginning-to-intermediate photographer's library。 。。。more

Superb book for the beginner wishing to delve deeper into the world of photography。 I've recently tried several other books for the interested novice but none are as clear, readable or as beautifully illustrated as this one。 It's cleared up a couple of concepts I was really struggling with and I know it's a book I'll return to again and again。 Superb book for the beginner wishing to delve deeper into the world of photography。 I've recently tried several other books for the interested novice but none are as clear, readable or as beautifully illustrated as this one。 It's cleared up a couple of concepts I was really struggling with and I know it's a book I'll return to again and again。 。。。more

In all likelihood there is a lot written in here that you already know—since the book covers the very basics—so I recommend selectively reading sections that you know very little to nothing about。 I recently began shooting professionally full-time, and I can’t say I’m a better photographer after reading this。 It served rather as a reminder of the basics and not in a particular interesting or creative way。 For a beginning photographer, however, this is a 3。5 star read。
